Get Local: Everything you need to get the day started!
It's Thursday, Aug. 21st and we've got the latest from Auburn to Victor; and the most up-to-date information to keep you in the know before hitting the road.
What’s on the agenda tonight?
Auburn City Council meets tonight at 5 p.m. to tackle a busy agenda. Councilors will vote on selling a city-owned property on Barber Street, while also considering major changes to road and culvert projects. The paving work on North Street alone could add $750,000 to the city’s road program, though most of the cost would be reimbursed by state funds. The meeting also features a police pinning ceremony and an update on the city’s summer recreation program.
Finger Lakes Forecast: Warming up, then falling to fall-like temps next week.
The Finger Lakes will see a stretch of warm, mostly dry weather to start, followed by a stormy weekend. Thursday looks cool with highs in the low 70s, then sunshine returns Friday and Saturday with highs climbing into the upper 80s. Showers and thunderstorms move in Saturday night and linger through Sunday, bringing a good chance of rain. Early next week stays cooler, with highs in the 70s and occasional showers Monday and Tuesday before drying out midweek.
Fast 5: What’s happening in the Finger Lakes?
A crash at the intersection of Route 96 and Turk Hill Road in Victor sent one person to the hospital Wednesday afternoon. Deputies say a Jeep turning left failed to yield and collided with a pickup truck around 3:45 p.m. A passenger was taken to Strong Memorial Hospital with chest pain, though their condition wasn’t released. The Jeep’s driver, 34-year-old Alicia Hough of Spencerport, was ticketed for failure to yield.
Auburn police say a woman was arrested after stabbing an elderly family member during a fight on VanAnden Street early Wednesday morning. Officers say 39-year-old Angelina Burgdoff attacked the victim with her hands, a cane, and eventually a knife, also damaging property inside the home. She was charged with assault, weapon possession, menacing, and criminal mischief. Burgdoff was taken to the Cayuga County Jail to await arraignment.
The Keuka Lake Wine Trail just rolled out a revamped Passport Program with new ways to sip and explore. Visitors can now choose from a Tasting Passport, a Glass Pass, or a dog-friendly “Paws & Pours” option that even includes treats for pups. Each pass offers year-long flexibility and perks like discounts or full pours at the six member wineries. It’s all part of the Trail’s 40th anniversary celebration, highlighting award-winning spots like Heron Hill, Keuka Spring, and Weis Vineyards.
FEMA has rolled out updated flood maps for Wayne County, and residents will have 90 days to review them starting August 27. The maps could affect future flood insurance rules and property risk ratings, so officials are urging locals to double-check the details. Homeowners can even flag simple errors like road names or boundaries, but appeals on flood zones must include technical data. Final versions of the maps are expected to take effect in late 2026 once all comments are resolved.
Victor’s Planning Board spent Tuesday night reviewing two big proposals but held off on any final votes. One project would turn a Route 96 building into a dog grooming and boarding facility with 43 kennels and outdoor play space, while the other calls for a 4.4-megawatt solar farm in Fishers. Neighbors raised questions about barking noise, tree removal, and glare from solar panels, with both applicants asked to provide more details. Six other projects, including a Chick-fil-A and hotel plan, were pushed to future meetings.
NASCAR moves Watkins Glen up in the schedule: Coming Mother’s Day weekend in 2026!
NASCAR is shifting its Watkins Glen race weekend to Mother’s Day in 2026, marking the third straight year the event has landed on a new date. The races will run May 8-10, the earliest Cup Series stop at The Glen since 1965. The O’Reilly Auto Parts Series and Craftsman Truck Series will also compete, with ARCA’s involvement still to be announced. The change places Watkins Glen in the first third of the NASCAR season instead of its usual mid-summer slot.
