Teens rescued after fall at Clark Gully trail
Two teenagers were rescued Monday afternoon after sliding 20 to 30 feet off a muddy trail in the Clark Gully area near Canandaigua Lake. The incident triggered a rapid rope rescue response from Yates and Ontario County crews. Despite the challenging conditions, rescuers reached the teens within 15 minutes and found no serious injuries. Both were airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital for further evaluation.

The Finger Lakes region will see partly sunny skies today with highs near 74 before clouds move in tonight. Rain is expected to arrive Wednesday afternoon and continue into Thursday, with moderate chances of showers each day. Friday and Saturday bring lower chances of scattered rain, with temperatures holding in the mid-60s to low 70s. Conditions improve by Sunday and Monday, with mostly sunny skies and highs returning to the low 70s.

A fire broke out early Monday morning at a home on Dayton Street in Auburn, causing significant damage but no injuries. Auburn firefighters arrived within minutes and found flames throughout the structure, which they contained in under an hour. No one was home at the time, and the American Red Cross is assisting the displaced homeowner. The cause of the fire remains under investigation.
Casey Murphy, 28, of Canandaigua, pleaded guilty to third-degree assault in connection with a 2024 dog attack that injured a father and his 9-year-old son. Murphy was watching the dog when it escaped and attacked Ryan and Wren VanGrol, leaving the father with lasting arm injuries. The child has since required counseling due to the incident. Murphy will be sentenced on July 16, while the dog’s owner, Madison Herendeen, is scheduled for trial in September.
The Tyre Planning Board will hold a public hearing tonight at 6:30 p.m. to review a site plan submitted by the Seneca Chamber of Commerce for its property on Route 318. The proposal involves Tax Parcel #12-1-32.2 and aims to gather community input before any decisions are made. Residents can attend the meeting at the Tyre Municipal Building or submit written comments in advance. The full site plan is available for public review at the municipal offices and on the town’s website.
The Cayuga County Legislature will meet tonight to address a range of issues, including a proposed hiring freeze, housing assistance programs, and environmental concerns at the shuttered County Office Building. Lawmakers will also vote on salary adjustments for election officials, new contracts for mental health services, and emergency communications upgrades. A public hearing will be held on fixing salaries for certain county officers through 2028. Additional items include IT agreements, grant consulting, and recognizing three residents as Senior Citizens of the Year.
A Seneca Falls woman was seriously injured in a two-car crash at the intersection of County Road 129 and Vineyard Road in Romulus on May 20. Deputies say Betsy A. Smith, 79, failed to yield at a stop sign, causing her vehicle to be struck by a northbound pickup truck. Smith was airlifted to Upstate Medical University by Life Net for treatment. She is expected to be ticketed and appear in Romulus Town Court at a later date.
