Auburn Council approves road and police projects, begins collecting occupancy tax
The Auburn City Council approved more than $660,000 in contracts for intersection improvements and police department renovations, while officially launching its new occupancy tax. Councilors also discussed updated downtown parking rules and celebrated a legal win requiring the state to revisit protections for Owasco Lake. Summer programs continue drawing large crowds as the city hosts concerts, markets, and family events.

A Wayne County Deputy was injured Friday after a driver leaving the jail parking lot struck his patrol vehicle outside the Sheriff’s Office on Route 31. The driver, 23-year-old Hunter Boyer of Lyons, was ticketed for reckless driving and six other violations. Deputy Dennie was taken to Newark-Wayne Hospital for evaluation of a possible head injury, and the crash remains under investigation.
The Canandaigua Planning Commission reviewed several major proposals, including the 79-home Waterchase subdivision, which drew public concern over drainage and flooding. Plans for a new dental office and outdoor dining downtown were tabled for design revisions, while updates to Roseland Wake Park and Gem Creek Brewery received approval. Commissioners also approved signage replacements for Tim Hortons and Rochester Management.
A 45-year-old motorcyclist was killed Friday after crashing into a stationary dump truck on Parker Road in Marion, according to New York State Police. The truck driver, who remained at the scene and showed no signs of impairment, is cooperating with the investigation. State Police units and the Wayne County Coroner responded, and the crash remains under investigation.
The Tri-County YMCA is planning a large new community center in Dansville that would combine fitness, healthcare, and senior services under one roof. The proposed 40,000 to 60,000-square-foot facility would partner with Noyes Health and the Livingston County Office for the Aging. Still in early planning stages, the project depends on grants and local fundraising, with no construction date yet set.
Rescue crews from Enfield and Ithaca worked together Thursday to save an injured hiker stranded below Lucifer Falls in Robert H. Treman State Park. The operation involved stabilizing the patient and executing a rope rescue in one of the park’s most remote areas. The hiker was safely transported to Upper Treman by ATV in stable condition after a two-hour effort.
