The Hornell Public Library suffered extensive damage this week after being vandalized with vulgar graffiti, forcing the removal of its historic front doors. Two nearby businesses were also hit, and police are actively investigating. Despite the setback, the library remains open and has received strong community support as staff work toward restoring the building.
Goodwill of the Finger Lakes is expanding into the former Tops building at the Geneva Shopping Center, city officials confirmed. Renovations are underway, marking the nonprofit’s third Ontario County location alongside Canandaigua and Victor. Local leaders say the move will support sustainable retail, create jobs, and help revitalize the partially vacant plaza.
A Tompkins County student nearly died after vaping a substance they thought was marijuana, which was later confirmed to be laced with fentanyl. The teen collapsed at school and survived only after receiving multiple doses of Narcan. Authorities say the vape was purchased from an unlicensed store, prompting urgent warnings from officials and school leaders about the deadly risks of illicit products.
New York school districts may now qualify for a second 24-month extension to meet the state’s zero-emission bus mandate, if they can prove good-faith efforts to address cost and infrastructure challenges. Lawmakers added $100 million in aid, but some critics argue more research is needed before enforcing the mandate. New legislation could extend the deadline to 2040 for smaller or struggling districts, acknowledging the need for more flexible timelines.
A 30-year-old man was seriously injured after being struck by a vehicle while crossing Geneva Street in Lyons on Friday night. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office identified the pedestrian as Dimitri M.W. McKinney, who was first taken to Newark-Wayne Hospital before being airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital. The incident remains under investigation.
