The Penn Yan Village Board approved five local laws and advanced numerous public projects during its May 20 meeting, including zoning updates, sewer enforcement changes, and new short-term rental inspection rules. A new law also aims to ease truck congestion on Maiden Lane by redirecting deliveries to a nearby municipal lot. The board approved several community events, staff appointments, and a joint public hearing with the Town of Benton on a land annexation petition. Infrastructure updates, budget finalizations, and legal discussions on PFAS contamination settlements were also key parts of the meeting.

The weekend should end on a drier note Sunday, before another round of rain moves in Monday and Tuesday.

A fire early Tuesday morning displaced three adults, two children, and several pets from an apartment in Farmington. Crews responded to 1072 Willow Brook Bend around 7:20 a.m. and quickly contained the blaze, which began in the kitchen. The building’s fire suppression system helped limit damage, and no injuries were reported. The American Red Cross is assisting those affected, while the cause remains under investigation.
A motorcyclist died following a crash in Geneva on Sunday afternoon involving a three-wheel motorcycle. Police say Richard L. Howard lost control while turning from North Street onto Oak Street, causing the vehicle to overturn and land on him. He was first taken to Geneva General Hospital, then airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital due to severe injuries. Howard died from those injuries on Monday, according to police.
A 19-year-old caregiver in Penn Yan was arrested after allegedly assaulting a physically disabled relative during a domestic dispute. Police say Rayna L. Rios struck the victim with a closed fist and poured Gatorade and powdered creamer on them. The victim was unable to escape due to their physical condition. Rios was taken into custody at the scene and held for arraignment to secure an order of protection.
Corning Town Supervisor Jenniffer Mullen was arrested Tuesday on felony charges including grand larceny, falsifying business records, and filing a false document. Steuben County Sheriff Jim Allard confirmed the arrest but did not provide further details. Mullen was issued an appearance ticket and released pending court action. The case remains under investigation, with more information expected as proceedings continue.
A serious ATV crash near Pinckney Road in Cayuga County left at least two people injured, with one airlifted by Mercy Flight. Emergency crews from Aurelius, Throop, and Auburn responded to the scene, and Auburn took command of the incident. A landing zone was set up at the New York State Police barracks for the medevac operation. Another patient was transported by Throop Ambulance, and all units cleared the scene within hours.
