Canandaigua City Council approves flood mitigation projects, housing development
Canandaigua City Council approved a major residential development and a $5.8 million flood mitigation plan during its Monday meeting. The 27.4-acre Waterchase Subdivision project received SEQRA clearance, sketch plan approval, and rezoning under the city's PUD ordinance. Council also allocated funds for stormwater infrastructure and accepted new public safety equipment for the police department. Additionally, the city honored a longtime employee and handled several routine budget and permitting items.

Rainy and cool conditions will dominate the Finger Lakes region through the weekend, with highs in the low-to-mid 50s and frequent chances of showers. Rain is expected today through Friday night, tapering to scattered showers by Saturday. Drier weather returns Sunday and Memorial Day, bringing partly sunny skies and warmer temperatures in the 60s. Another round of showers is possible starting Tuesday, continuing into midweek.

An 18-year-old man was killed in a fiery crash on State Route 224 in Cayuta, Schuyler County. The accident happened around 9:30 p.m. on May 20 when the driver lost control on a curve, hit a tree, and the SUV overturned and caught fire. State Police said the victim died at the scene, and his identity has not yet been released. The investigation into the crash remains ongoing.
A Bath man was arrested Monday morning after a two-and-a-half-hour armed standoff with police on West Washington Street. Authorities say 66-year-old Timothy W. Holiday threatened to assault and shoot an officer during an unrelated investigation, prompting a large law enforcement response. Holiday was eventually taken into custody after allegedly attempting to strike a deputy with a large staff. He faces multiple charges, including two felonies, and is being held without bail due to prior convictions.
An Auburn woman was arrested Tuesday night after allegedly stabbing two women and attempting to hide from police in her attic. Officers responded to Seymour and Holly streets around 9 p.m. and found the victims with non-life-threatening injuries. The suspect, Kelli Vroman, was located at her home on Liberty Street, where she was allegedly found hiding in the attic. Vroman was charged with two counts of assault and one count of criminal possession of a weapon, and taken to the Cayuga County Jail for arraignment.
A Brutus woman has been charged with arson following an April house fire that destroyed her home and damaged nearby properties. Marea L. Slate, 48, was arrested on May 20 and is accused of intentionally setting the fire inside her residence on April 18. She was charged with fourth-degree arson, a class E felony, and released with an appearance ticket for May 27 in Brutus Town Court. The investigation involved the Sheriff’s Office, state fire investigators, a K9 unit, multiple fire departments, and the Cayuga County DA’s Office.
Auburn City Council will hold two public hearings tonight on proposals to override the state property tax cap and adopt a $49 million budget for the 2025-26 fiscal year. The meeting begins at 5 p.m. at Memorial City Hall, where residents can weigh in on Local Law #1 and the proposed budget, which includes funding for public safety, infrastructure, and city services. Council will also consider agreements related to emergency response, road funding, and IT services. Officials encourage public participation in person, online, or through written or voicemail comments.
