Republicans blast record $254B NYS budget as wasteful and out of touch
New York lawmakers finally passed a $254 billion budget Thursday night, ending a 38-day delay after Gov. Kathy Hochul refused to budge without key policy wins. Despite weeks of infighting, the Assembly wrapped early, just before 9:30 p.m., with the Senate following soon after. Hochul claimed victory on a series of contentious reforms, including evidence-sharing changes backed by city prosecutors, stricter involuntary commitment laws, and a classroom cellphone ban. Her tactics, however, infuriated legislators, with one senator accusing her of acting like a monarch. Her press tour ahead of the final deal only deepened divisions.

Ontario County has confirmed a measles case in a resident who has fully recovered, with no public risk identified. The individual contracted the virus outside the county in late March, and no further exposures have occurred. Health officials credit isolation and vaccinations for preventing spread. Residents are urged to get the MMR vaccine amid a nationwide rise in cases, including outbreaks in the U.S. Southwest and Ontario, Canada.
Five Republicans are competing for two open seats on the Seneca Falls Town Board, with a primary set for June 24. Incumbents Kaitlyn Laskoski and Frank Sinicropi are not seeking re-election, opening the field to Tiffany Rotz, Mason Hawker, Ken Hilkert, Emil Bove Jr., and Wendy Crane. Bove previously served on the board, while Crane ran in 2023. The top two vote-getters will face Democrats selected at a caucus ahead of the July 24 deadline, and county supervisor contests are also shaping up with GOP challenges from Greg Lazzaro and Jennifer Wick.
Canisteo Police Chief Kyle Amidon has resigned after a state investigation found he falsified time sheets and mishandled a police club he founded. The probe began in April 2024 following an anonymous tip to village officials. Amidon pleaded guilty to filing false documents, was ordered to repay over $13,000, and received a one-year conditional discharge. He had served as chief since 2017 and also held a part-time role in North Hornell.
A Hector resident’s encounter with a satellite company worker raised alarm after the employee asked for Social Security information. Evan Forrest reported the incident, suspecting a scam when the visitor returned seeking more personal details. Authorities confirmed the employee’s identity was legitimate but used the case to remind the public to request identification and never share private information without verification. The Schuyler County Sheriff emphasized that scams often occur through phone or internet and warned against disclosing sensitive data.
The Cayuga County Legislature has officially opposed the proposed Seneca Meadows Landfill expansion, citing health and environmental impacts. The resolution challenges plans to increase the landfill’s height by 70 feet, add 47 acres, and extend operations to 2040. Cayuga officials also want to be recognized as an interested party in the review process and are calling for more public input. Separately, the Seneca Falls board discussed beautification projects, a cemetery fund transfer, and a pilot organic waste drop-off program.
