Why is the Finger Lakes a top U.S. lake vacation destination?
The Finger Lakes region of New York has been recognized by U.S. News & World Report as one of the top lake vacation destinations in the U.S. for 2025. Known for its stunning landscapes, waterfalls, and renowned wineries, the area offers year-round outdoor and cultural experiences across 11 glacier-formed lakes. Visitors can enjoy hiking, skiing, museums, and a wide range of accommodations from lakefront resorts to cozy cabins.
Finger Lakes Forecast: Finally … Some sun!
The Finger Lakes region will enjoy sunny and mild weather through Monday, with highs reaching 78°F to start the workweek. A pattern shift begins Tuesday with increasing clouds and a chance of showers each day through Friday, peaking with a 50% rain chance to end the week. Temperatures will steadily climb, with highs in the low 80s by Thursday and Friday.
Fast 5: What’s happening in the Finger Lakes?
The Auburn City Council approved a $784,405 contract for citywide road upgrades and reaffirmed its commitment to protecting Owasco Lake through watershed initiatives and expanded conservation efforts. Residents voiced concerns about inconsistent parking enforcement, while the Council declared May as Motorcycle Safety and Awareness Month amid rising rider fatalities. Heavy rainfall stressed the city’s wastewater system, but officials praised crews for successfully managing the storm's impact on local infrastructure and the lake.
The Penn Yan Village Board advanced key infrastructure initiatives, including sewer upgrades and the installation of a debris boom across the Keuka Outlet, while adopting a lead agency role under SEQRA with no anticipated environmental impacts. Trustees introduced laws to regulate shared sewer laterals and restrict parking on Maiden Lane, setting public hearings for May 20. Budget approvals avoided steep rate hikes by securing contract extensions, and the board also approved police vehicle funding, utility automation designs, and peddler licensing, while addressing annexation and public education efforts in closed session.
The Old Farmer’s Almanac predicts a “scorcher of a summer” for New York in 2025, with July and August expected to bring broiling heat across much of the state. While June may begin near seasonal norms, the forecast calls for well above-average temperatures later in the season, especially in Western and Upstate New York. The National Weather Service supports the hotter outlook, while AccuWeather offers a slightly milder take—but all agree New Yorkers should prepare for intense heat spells.
Mathew Mosher, 51, of Auburn, pleaded guilty to a violent 2024 assault in which he set a woman on fire using nail polish remover, causing serious burns to her legs. He also admitted to a separate aggravated family offense involving another victim. Mosher faces up to 15 years in prison and will be sentenced in July, with additional post-release supervision expected.
The ongoing legal battle between Greenidge Generation and the New York State Department of Environmental Conservation over a denied air permit will head to a three-day hearing starting June 10 in Albany. The dispute stems from the DEC’s 2022 rejection of Greenidge’s Clean Air Act permit renewal, which the company is actively contesting. While litigation continues, the evidentiary hearings will proceed, and the public is allowed to attend with valid photo ID.
