Historic Scythe Tree in Waterloo falls under clear skies: Ice storm 20 years ago likely led to this moment
The iconic Scythe Tree, a symbol of young men going off to war, unexpectedly fell Wednesday evening in Waterloo on Routes 5&20. The tree had experienced significant damage during the ice storm of April 2003 which prompted the need for restoration efforts. Despite those, the tree succumbed to its years, falling under pretty ordinary circumstances a little before 8 p.m. two days ago.

Democrats endorse Republican for town supervisor in Seneca Falls: Caucus makes other selections for November’s elections
Frank Schmitter, a registered Republican, will make a bid for the position of town supervisor, appearing on both the Republican and Democratic party lines in the upcoming November elections.
Schmitter defeated incumbent supervisor Mike Ferrara in the Republican primary on June 27. He nominated by Steve Churchill, a current Town Board member, at the Democratic Party caucus on July 18. His nomination was seconded by Tim Hopkins and faced no opposition.
Auburn School District seeks public input on strengthening cellphone policy amid mental health concerns
The Auburn Enlarged City School District has announced plans for a public hearing aimed at reforming its electronic device policy, citing increasing concerns about the impact of cellphone use on students’ mental health and learning abilities.
The hearing, scheduled for 5 p.m. on Tuesday, July 25 at the Harriet Tubman Administration Building, invites public perspectives on the matter, according to a district news release.
The current policy, which strictly prohibits personal electronic device use except for authorized instances, has proven difficult to enforce uniformly.
