Wildfire smoke returns, prompting Air Quality Health Advisory across Finger Lakes, most of New York State
Canadian wildfire smoke is back and state agencies have issued an Air Quality Health Advisory. The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) and the State Department of Health (DOH) have jointly issued an Air Quality Health Advisory for numerous regions across the state. The advisory is set in response to expected high levels of fine particulate matter and ozone pollutants, with an Air Quality Index (AQI) predicted to exceed 100. At times today, the AQI will likely reach unhealthy for some, or unhealthy for all levels across the state.
Williamson’s Rootstock Cider and Spirits will shut down in September
Rootstock Cider and Spirits, a popular craft cidery located in Williamson, Wayne County, announced its permanent closure this summer. According to the Wednesday announcement, the family-owned business will cease operations on September 1, with bar services at the tasting room ending earlier on July 30. In a press release, the DeFisher family attributed the tough decision to a blend of factors such as the fluctuating economy, the rising costs of operation, and market expansion expenses. The late-season freeze in May, which wreaked havoc on the farm’s apple crop, was another critical factor, as apple cider production is the heart of Rootstock’s operations.
