Work begins immediately to redraw NY’s Congressional maps after court decision
New York’s Appellate Court has ordered the state’s Congressional maps be redrawn. The Bipartisan State Commission will start work immediately. After the 2020 census, the commission did not agree on a new map, leading to a lengthy legal challenge. It ended with a state court judge overseeing the new map’s redrawing process for the 2022 elections. In this case, Democrats are arguing the special master’s maps were only meant to be used for the 2022 election, not for the next decade.
Cayuga County initiative provides state ID’s to incarcerated people upon release
Cayuga County Clerk Sue Dwyer and Sheriff Brian Schenck announced a new initiative aimed at aiding the successful re-entry of incarcerated individuals into the community. The program, created through a partnership with the Cayuga County Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) and the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Custody Division, facilitates the issuance of state identification cards and licenses to individuals upon their release from jail. The initiative is funded through the incarcerated individuals’ commissary funds, ensuring no additional costs to local taxpayers.
State will spend $200M on Downtown Revitalization Initiative, NY Forward programs
Governor Kathy Hochul announced a new allocation of $200 million for New York’s signature downtown revitalization and economic development programs. The funds will be evenly split between Round 7 of the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI) and Round 2 of the NY Forward program, both aimed at revitalizing smaller, rural downtowns. With this year’s allocation, state investment in the programs since their launch in 2016 has reached the $1 billion milestone. So far, $800 million in funding has been awarded to 93 communities statewide. The application deadline for this round of funding is September 29 at 4 p.m.
