Destruction in Tompkins County; three struck by lightning in CNY after severe thunderstorms
Severe thunderstorms that swept through Central New York on Monday have left a trail of destruction, prompting numerous calls for assistance to emergency dispatchers. Tompkins County, among the worst hit, saw significant property damage, power outages, and widespread flooding. Particular concern was raised for the town of Enfield, where a barn was blown down, and for Ithaca’s Taughannock Boulevard and Cliff Street. Outside Ithaca, the Varna and Ellis Hollow areas of the Town of Dryden experienced significant damage, including destroyed structures on Hayts and Sheffield Roads.
UPDATE: Rochester woman ID’d in drowning accident at Chimney Bluffs State Park
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office has provided an update to the tragic drowning incident involving a 20-year-old Rochester woman, identified as Deanna R. Melvin. The Sheriff’s Office reported that a 911 distress call was received around 2:07 p.m. that day, indicating two people were struggling in the water. On arrival, emergency personnel found a 28-year-old male had been pulled ashore, but a young female, later identified as Melvin, had disappeared underwater. Bystanders had managed to secure the male using a lifejacket, but attempts to locate Melvin proved unsuccessful.
Auburn prison deputy superintendent arrested after road rage incident in Southern Tier
State police say the deputy superintendent of the Auburn Correctional Facility was involved in a road rage incident in the Southern Tier, and now faces serious charges.
Gregory Stachowski, 40, of Big Flats was arrested for a felony count of grand larceny and misdemeanor count of official misconduct after state police responded to a complaint near I-86 and State Route 13 in Horseheads. He’s accused of being part of a road rage incident, which was followed by the larceny of the victim’s cell phone.
