SEVERE STORMS: Clean up begins after damaging winds rip through Finger Lakes
It was a busy day in the Finger Lakes and Central New York as severe thunderstorms moved through — packing an intense punch! Damaging winds were the biggest problem for those in western Ontario County.

Penn Yan Airport conducting first solar lighting test in US
The lights were installed in September 2021. Runway and taxiway edge lights, obstruction lights, elevated runway guard lights, windsocks, and signs are lit with their own solar panels and battery supplies, according to FAA officials. Yates County Administrator Nonie Flynn says the installation will be tested for a year with an eye toward putting similar systems into airports that aren’t able or can’t afford to run lighting off the power grid. Small businesses face a big insurance hike if NYS doesn’t pay back $8 billion in federal unemployment loan
New York State owes the federal government around $8 billion. That’s for a loan it took during the coronavirus pandemic to pay unemployment benefits to New Yorkers who were out of work due to economic shutdown. How will it be repaid? That’s one major, looming question for state leaders.
Motorcyclist airlifted with serious injuries after Steuben County crash
Deputies say one person was airlifted following a motorcycle accident in the town of Caton. It happened on State Route 225 when a motorcyclist struck a deer. Investigators say the deer entered the roadway and the motorcyclist collided with it. The 52-year-old operator, who was not immediately identified by the Steuben County Sheriff’s Office, was a Horseheads resident.
Ontario Mazda becomes West Herr Mazda: Full renovation planned at Canandaigua dealership
The West Herr Automotive Group acquired the Mazda dealership along with a Chevrolet dealership in Rochester. West Herr Mazda opened on Thursday. It has 12 employees with the goal to grow to 20 employees in the coming years. The facility will be given a full renovation in the next two years, too.
Flood mitigation project complete in Sodus Point: Village hopes its protected from future flooding
State officials said the project in Sodus Point, as well as another in Irondequoit were positive examples that stemmed from the REDI initiative. The program gave millions to communities along Lake Ontario to prevent future flood damage- like was seen between 2017 and 2019.
Tompkins County will test unarmed response from law enforcement to select incidents
What happens if police officers respond to incidents unarmed? That question is being explored through a pilot program in Tompkins County. A virtual public forum will be held on the program next week. The forum will outline the elements of unarmed response, and walk residents through the process. It’s happening Tuesday, June 21 at 12 p.m.
