Auburn city officials call on Judge McAllister to reject ‘devastating’ proposed district maps
Three Auburn city officials asked state Supreme Court Judge Patrick McAllister to reject the proposed congressional and state Senate maps drawn by a court-appointed expert. McAllister was the first judge to rule the district maps drawn by the Democrat-controlled Legislature unconstitutional back in April. Now, he will have a say in whether expert Dr. Jonathan Cervas’ new draft maps, released earlier this week, will be adopted by the state.
Republican Steve Wells enters race in NY’s redrawn 22nd Congressional District
Cazenovia resident and businessman Steve Wells announced his candidacy this week for New York’s redrawn 22nd Congressional District. Wells, a founding partner of the American Food and Vending Corporation, announced his candidacy for the 22nd Congressional District on Wednesday, May 18. New York’s newly redrawn 22nd district includes Onondaga, Tompkins, Madison, Southern Cayuga and Northern Cortland counties.
DMV urges New Yorkers to get a REAL ID in advance of federal deadline
A standard license or non-driver ID card will no longer be accepted to fly within the U.S. next year. The New York State Department of Motor Vehicles is urging residents to get a REAL ID before the May 3, 2023 federal deadline to avoid the last-minute rush for IDs next spring. “If you wait to get the REAL ID closer to the deadline it’s going to get packed… It’s stressful for the customer, and for the staff here,” said Chemung County DMV Supervisor Janice Farwell, according to WETM. “Less time in the DMV is always good right?”

One sent to Strong with burns after structure fire at Arcadia motel
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office reports the investigation of a structure fire in the town of Arcadia. It happened around 12:40 a.m. on Thursday, according to a news release. Deputies responded to Route 31 for a structure fire. Upon arrival, they found a person who had awoken at the motel to a fire. The male sustained burns to his torso and arms.
INSIDE THE FLX: HEALing Community Study tackes opioid abuse in Auburn and Cayuga County
HEALing Communities is a project that’s been in existence in Cayuga County for a little over two years. The HEALing team that was funded by the a state grant combines expertise in substance use disorder, project management, communications, peer work, community outreach, how to navigate local services, data analysis, health research, and facilitating organizational change. In collaboration with community partners, the team collected and analyzed near-real-time overdose data, which helped them identify susceptible populations, geographic areas of need, and any potentially concerning trends in a timely manner. It also allowed us to facilitate the implementation of targeted programs to ensure access to care where and when it is needed. This infrastructure did not exist before the grant.

With the weather turning to positive forecasts, the music scene around the Finger Lakes is heating up. On this week’s edition of FLX Music 247, Janelle Bradshaw gives us plenty of acts and venues to check out over the next week. Live from Linden and the Geneva Music Festival highlight the weekend at the north end of Seneca Lake, while the Jim E Leggs Trio and The Garcia Project highlight acts at points east. Flint Creek is performing Thursday night at the Taste of Spring at del Lago while the beginning of next week offers The Flock at Clam Man’s Party House.
