Stabbing in Palmyra: Victim airlifted to Strong Memorial Hospital after Speedway incident
Troopers discovered that there was an argument between Martin Hillenbrand, 32, and a 17-year-old male. The argument allegedly started over Hillenbrand leaving two young children- ages 3- and 10-months unattended in his vehicle. He then stabbed the victim in the torso and leg, causing severe enough injuries that they needed to be airlifted to Strong Hospital.
Finger Lakes Travel: A trip to the Women’s Rights Park, good eats and our summer bucket list
We were blessed with some warm weather in the Finger Lakes this week and took full advantage of it. I headed downtown Seneca Falls to the Women’s Rights National Historical Park, which is one of Seneca Falls’ biggest tourist attractions. Not only is the center educational, but it’s also set up beautifully. My favorite thing about the center is the water walls!
17-year-old charged with felony assault after attack with knife in Cayuga County
State police in Auburn have arrested a juvenile following an assault investigation in the village of Meridian. According to a news release, troopers were dispatched to an alleged assault around 10:42 p.m. on May 13. The preliminary investigation revealed the victim, Sean R. Broadwell, age 23, was walking to his residence with his brother when a verbal argument ensued with a group of neighbor teens.
Buffalo mass shooting: Gunman facing murder charges after killing 10, wounding others in racist attack at grocery store
The U.S. Justice Department is investigating after a mass shooting on Saturday in the city of Buffalo. It happened on Jefferson Avenue, where 10 people were shot dead — and three others wounded by an 18-year-old gunman. The attack is being described as a hate crime and act of racially motivated violent extremism, according to federal investigators.
Attorney General James provides guidance to protect the digital privacy of people seeking abortion care
New York Attorney General Letitia James today offered guidance to protect the privacy of individuals seeking abortion care and prevent unwanted digital tracking and data sharing. Recent reports indicate that online platforms and consumer apps, like those widely used to track fertility and menstrual cycles, have been collecting and sharing consumers’ personal information.
Large fire destroys barn and warehouse in Penn Yan
A 911 call was made just after 5 p.m. on May 13. Firefighters were quickly on the scene at HK Griffin & Sons on Benham Street. Due to the size of the structure and scope of the fire, nearby fire departments were called to the scene, including Benton, Bellona, Branchport/Keuka Park, Dundee and Himrod. Three ladder trucks were required to fight the flames.
Cayuga Sheriff: Convicted murderer should never be allowed to go free
James R. Moore, a former landscaper from the Rochester area, will be released around June 6 after serving 59 years for the 1962 murder of 14-year-old Pamela Moss of Penfield. Moore is the state’s longest-serving prison inmate. Schenck says Moore’s crime and others he admitted to are so heinous, that he should never be allowed to go free.
Naples tree trimmer killed in fall from tree in Penn Yan
The Yates County Sheriff’s Department says 27-year-old Ryan Rector was trimming a tree for his company, Hillside Logging and Tree Service at about 7 a.m. Friday when he fell about 50 to 60 feet from the tree. He was reported to be not responsive with pulse and breathing unknown when first responders arrived. Penn Yan Ambulance, Medic 55, Branchport Fire Department, Yates County OEM, and a Yates County Coroner also responded to the scene. Rector was pronounced deceased at the scene and the incident is under investigation by the Yates County Sheriff’s Office and Yates County Coroner’s Office at this time.

May is also Motorcycle Safety Awareness Month. We went over some of the basic tips for motorcyclists and those in cars. There has been a sharp increase in DWI arrests by the Sheriff’s Department year to date. We discussed why that might be and agreed there’s been a definite increase in aggressive driving overall. There have been a number of thefts from unlocked cars throughout the county in the past few months. The Sheriff reminded everyone to keep their cars and homes locked.

Operation Enduring Gratitude left from City Hall this morning. The program is a service project of Knights of Columbus Council #207. 75 veterans are on their way to Washington, DC to see the sites and visit the memorials. Among those on the trip is 91-year-old Anne Greer of Throop, who last visited Washington as the wife of a Marine in 1970. Greer also served in the Marine Corps at Camp Lejuene and Parris Island in the 1950s. She was nominated for the Marine Wife of the Year award in 2021. She will be the first female veteran from Cayuga County to go on an Operation Enduring Gratitude trip.
Auburn gives sendoff for Operation Enduring Gratitude bus trip to Washington
91-year-old Anne Greer of Throop was a finalist for the Military Spouse of the Year award. Her husband, Richard served 30 years in the Marine Corps, including tours in Korea and Vietnam. Anne served in the Marines at Camp Lejeune and Parris Island in the 1950s.
