BATTLING ADDICTION IN CAYUGA COUNTY: OFFICIALS WORK TO HELP THOSE LOOKING FOR RECOVERY
After a string of overdoses in Cayuga County — Sheriff Brian Schenck says the constant grind of drug-related issues has become challenging for his department. So far this year there have been at least 120 overdoses in Cayuga County alone. Now, a growing recovery organization is working to help those looking to turn things around. FL1 Reporter Rebecca Swift talks with those involved, who are working overtime to make a difference.
ANOTHER DEVASTATING FIRE AT MACEDON APARTMENT COMPLEX
First responders were called to an apartment building next to the Pal-Mac Intermediate School for the second time in about 8 months. In December, one of the buildings with multiple units and residents suffered major damage after an overnight fire. Now, another overnight fire has destroyed another building. The cause of the fire remains under investigation, but residents of the apartment complex are stressed about what might come next.

MAN WHO ESCAPED NEW HAMPSHIRE PRISON TAKEN INTO CUSTODY LOCALLY
Authorities in the Southern Tier say a man who escaped a New Hampshire prison through the laundry room has been taken into custody in Corning. Multiple agencies were involved in the prisoner’s apprehension — and now, he sits in the Steuben County Jail.

During the pandemic the state took a loan from the federal government to pay unemployment benefits. It sounded great at the time, but now, state officials say they need more money from New York State businesses to repay the loan. This despite the fact that the state is running at a surplus. So, businesses of all shapes and sizes can expect to see a bigger unemployment insurance tax bill.
LATEST ON MISSING PERSON SEARCH IN SENECA: POLICE WON’T IDENTIFY PERSON FOUND DEAD NEAR W. RIVER ROAD
In all likelihood it’s the final update to an investigation, which remains active. In an update on Wednesday, the Seneca County Sheriff’s Office thanked agencies and volunteers for their efforts during a 24-hour search for a person who went missing late-Tuesday. The victim, who was not identified, but recovered in a heavily wooded area between West River Road and the Cayuga-Seneca Canal, was deceased.
DIAPER DISCOUNT: PURCHASES WILL NOW BE EXEMPT FROM LOCAL TAXES
New parents can rejoice at having one, slightly lesser expense in 2022. Well, soon enough, anyway. A new bill recently signed into law will prevent local sales tax from being applied to diaper purchases. The move is a reaction to rising costs, as well as support agencies who buy diapers in bulk for those who cannot afford to purchase them outright. It will save upwards of 4% per purchase when it goes into effect later this year.
