South Seneca parents want deputy deployed to both schools following Texas shooting, incident at middle school
Three days after the shooting in Buffalo and a week before the shooting in Texas, South Seneca Central School District had its own threat to assess. FingerLakes1.com has learned of an incident that occurred on Tuesday, May 17 around 10:30 a.m. at South Seneca Middle School. The incident involved a student who allegedly had a list of student and staff member names open on his school-provided Chromebook, which sparked concern among other students in the classroom. The school looked into the matter and found no evidence of a threat. However, the incident sparked a debate over school protocol surrounding threats or perceived threats, the presence of School Resource Officers in schools and when a community notice of a threat should be issued.

Town of Geneva approves local laws covering ag commerce
The Geneva Town Board has approved two local laws that clarify the definition of agricultural commerce under the town’s zoning regulations. Both laws passed 3-1, with board member Jeff Dunham voting “no” on both. Board member Kim Aliperti, who co-owns Billsboro Winery and would be affected by the laws, abstained. The regulations were modified after a public hearing at which some residents expressed concerns about traffic and noise. Geneva Town Supervisor Mark Venuti says between changes made to the laws and the regulations that already govern wineries and breweries, there are proper limits in place.

Troopers investigate fatal motorcycle accident: Investigators seek public input
State police say they are investigating a fatal motorcycle crash that happened during the early morning hours on Sunday. Troopers were dispatched to Wolcott Street in Red Creek for the report of an unresponsive motorcyclist lying in a driveway. Investigation determined that at some point during the overnight hours, Bret Gascoigne, 22, was traveling north on Wolcott Street when he lost control and exited the roadway.

Gas prices: Memorial Day weekend hits drivers hard, no relief in sight
Gas prices have been skyrocketing for motorists over the last several weeks. Many motorists say they have simply stopped paying attention to it. According to AAA, 39.2 million people were expected to travel over the Memorial Day holiday weekend. That’s 8.3% more than last year. However, some motorists say they cut back on plans because of the cost.
Two arrested locally after South Carolina shooting leaves 6-year-old dead
On Friday, deputies received information that a vehicle involved in a homicide in Orangeburg County, South Carolina was observed in Ontario County. Investigators made contact with the Orangeburg County Sheriff’s Office and learned that they were looking for a silver Chrysler sedan that was observed fleeing the scene of a driveway shooting that happened on May 12, 2022. A 6-year-old was inside the home where the drive by shooting occurred. They were struck by gunfire and killed.
Second person dies after crash in Lyons
Deputies provided another update on the fatal crash that happened Friday, May 20 in the town of Lyons on Route 31. According to the latest information from the sheriff’s office, Nancy Delork, 84, who was the operator of the second vehicle, succumbed to injuries sustained in the wreck.
