Fatal shooting involving police last night in Auburn, boat capsizes in Sodus Bay, part of Cayuga Nation supports Auburn sculpture, and more on landfill concerns in Seneca Falls and Waterloo.
Fatal shooting investigation in Auburn
Authorities are investigating a fatal officer-involved shooting that occurred Thursday evening in Auburn’s Melone Village.
According to Cayuga County Sheriff Brian Schenck, the incident took place around 7:42 p.m. when Auburn Police officers were confronted by an armed individual.
The encounter resulted in the death of the suspect, while no officers were injured.
The investigation is being led by the Cayuga County Sheriff’s Office with assistance from the New York State Police, the State Attorney General’s Office, and the Cayuga County District Attorney’s Office.

BOAT CAPSIZED: A boating incident in Sodus Bay on Wednesday evening resulted in a capsized vessel, but all four occupants made it safely to shore. According to the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, the open bow boat, operated by David Schroo of Palmyra, took on large waves in the inlet between Sodus Bay and Lake Ontario, causing it to capsize around 6:22 p.m. [READ MORE]

ODOR ISSUES PERSIST: Waterloo Container, a major employer in Seneca County, is urging the Seneca Falls Town Board to deny an operating permit for the Seneca Meadows Landfill due to ongoing odor issues. Speaking at the board meeting, company spokesman Mark Pitifer highlighted that over 23% of their workdays in June and July were disrupted by unbearable odors, with some employees becoming ill.
