Greenidge Gets Reprieve on State Order to Close its Dresden Power Plant; New Judge to Preside Over Lawsuit
The judge presiding over a Greenidge Generation LLC lawsuit against the state Department of Environmental Conservation abruptly recused himself last week — one day after he temporarily blocked a DEC order to shut down the company’s power plant by Sept. 9.
KEY DETAILS
Greenidge's Dresden power plant gets a seven-week reprieve from closure after a judge recused himself, with enforcement of the DEC order postponed until Nov. 1.
The lawsuit challenging the DEC’s order is reassigned to Judge Vincent M. Dinolfo, with four environmental groups opposing Greenidge’s bid for a restraining order.
Greenidge's Title V air permit renewal was denied in 2022 due to increased emissions linked to Bitcoin mining, conflicting with New York’s climate goals.
FLX Forecast: What to expect today?
Fast 5: What’s happening in the Finger Lakes?
ARMED ROBBERY: Three individuals were arrested Wednesday after an armed robbery at a McDonald’s in Lyons. According to state police, the incident occurred around 6:00 p.m. when a man was robbed at gunpoint by suspects in a black sedan. The suspects tried escaping on foot with a loaded 3D-printed pistol before being taken into custody.
SEASON ENDING EARLY: The swimming area at Clute Park has been closed for the rest of the season after the detection of Harmful Algae Blooms in the water. Originally set to close on September 2, the popular beach was shut down earlier than planned, impacting the Labor Day weekend.
EEE CONCERNS RISE: A second horse in Cayuga County has died from Eastern Equine Encephalitis (EEE), the Health Department announced on August 29. The most recent case occurred in Red Creek, following a similar incident earlier this month in Cato.
FUNDING GAP: The Geneva Family YMCA and other local organizations are set to receive “bridge funding” from the United Way of Greater Rochester and the Finger Lakes, softening the impact of anticipated funding cuts. The YMCA, initially facing a potential $45,000 reduction in 2025, will have about half of that restored.
DOG ATTACK: A 43-year-old Rochester man and his 10-year-old son were seriously injured in a dog attack on South Main Street in Canandaigua’s business district on Thursday. The incident occurred around 9:44 a.m. when a tan pit bull ran up from behind and attacked the child, prompting the father to intervene. The dog then turned its aggression toward the father.
