We start things off with updates on a pair of structure fires yesterday in Phelps. The first was reported at Sheppard Grain, which is located on Maryland Rd. A building was completely destroyed by intense flames. Nearly simultaneously, firefighters were dispatched to a scene on County Rd. 25. Good news for frustrated utility customers in New York. The state has enacted a law, which prevents companies like RG&E or NYSEG from back-billing beyond three months. In short, it means if utility companies make billing errors — the window for them to correct is smaller. This comes after countless stories have emerged from customers across the state with massive bills caused by various billing errors. [Read More]
Geneva’s legal cannabis dispensary High Points is set to close its doors next week, just a month after opening. The dispensary, located near the entrance to the Lake Geneva Center Plaza, is facing closure as New York’s cannabis industry confronts another legal hurdle that threatens to destabilize the market. Ontario County District Attorney Jim Ritts is speaking out after a serial sex offender was arrested several times in a span of a few weeks. His comments come after public frustration over the repeated release of Paul Goodrell, a Canandaigua resident, who has been arrested at least three times since late-November for exposing himself to children at area grocery stores and other public places. Norm Teed, the long-serving supervisor of Phelps has announced his retirement effective January 1, citing family health issues as the primary reason. Teed made his decision public in an email earlier this week, which was reported by the Finger Lakes Times. His departure comes halfway through his current four-year term, which he secured after being reelected in 2021. [Read More]
