The statements highlighted challenges from New York’s Green Light Law, which restricts information sharing with federal agencies.
Finger Lakes Forecast: Squalls today; snow storm tomorrow?
Presented by Ciccinos Pizzeria & Restaurant!
Like snow? If you’re still not sick of winter here in the Finger Lakes the forecast will be an encouraging one. The region is going to see snow squalls this morning, which will last through the commute, then lake snows linger today for areas along Lake Ontario before a hefty, general snowfall arrives late-Saturday.
Fast 5: What’s happening in the Finger Lakes?
The Penn Yan Village Board criticized the Milo Town Board for rejecting the annexation of 72 acres for an affordable housing project. Trustees argued the rejection was based on unsupported claims and ignored Milo's own comprehensive plan encouraging residential development. Concerns over agricultural preservation, electric rates, and personal interests were cited as factors stalling the project, which aims to alleviate Penn Yan's housing crisis.
Governor Kathy Hochul welcomed 176 new State Troopers during a graduation ceremony for the 216th session of the New York State Police Academy. Graduates from the Finger Lakes region, including natives from Geneva, Waterloo, and Williamson, will soon begin their field training. Superintendent Steven G. James praised their dedication, emphasizing the values of professionalism and public safety.
A report from State Comptroller Tom DiNapoli revealed that New York's child care system is still struggling with staffing shortages, high costs, and limited access. Child care prices have risen nearly 18% over five years, and many rural areas remain "child care deserts." Lawmakers and advocates are pushing for federal and state investments, including a proposed $100 million fund to expand child care access and support workers.
A Siena College poll found that 78% of New Yorkers support allowing grocery stores to sell wine, with even higher support for promoting New York-made wines. The "New York State of Wine" coalition has backed a bill proposing a wine license for large grocery stores to boost local businesses. If passed, the bill would take effect immediately and is seen as a way to enhance the state's wine industry.
Voters in the Geneva City School District approved a $33.6 million capital project with over 81% support. The project includes renovations to all district schools, focusing on safety improvements, maintenance upgrades, and infrastructure for electric buses. Superintendent Bo Wright confirmed that the project will have no tax impact due to state building aid and the district's reserve fund.
Bills QB Josh Allen wins 2024 NFL MVP

He led the Bills to a 13-4 record and an AFC East title while posting career lows in interceptions and sacks, though the team ultimately fell short in the AFC Championship game against the Chiefs.
