Fast 5: What’s happening in the Finger Lakes?
The Cayuga County Legislature celebrated a significant milestone during its January 28 session with the announcement that the county jail had achieved state accreditation for its correctional division. The distinction, earned by only 33 of New York’s 62 counties, marks a pivotal accomplishment for local law enforcement. Sheriff Brian Schenck and his team were recognized by Peter Kehoe, Executive Director of the New York State Sheriffs’ Association, for meeting the rigorous standards set by experts in jail operations.
Fifty dead snow geese discovered at Kashong Point on Seneca Lake are being tested for bird flu, according to Ontario and Yates County health officials. The incident follows recent detections of the virus in Seneca County. Although the CDC states that the risk to humans is low, officials urge the public to avoid contact with groups of dead birds. Surveillance efforts, including an online reporting platform, are in place to track potential outbreaks.
Corrections Officer Shane Donahue retired this week after 25 years of dedicated service at the Wayne County Jail, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office announced. Donahue began his career with the department as a part-time officer in June 1999, transitioning to full-time in September of that year. In addition to his work at the jail, he has served as an active member of the military for more than 25 years.
The Village of Newark has been awarded two grants aimed at enhancing visitor experiences along the Erie Canal and celebrating its historic bicentennial. The first grant, provided by the New York State Canal Corporation and the Erie Canalway National Heritage Corridor, will fund infrastructure improvements. These enhancements include a new kiosk, wayfinding signage, landscaping, bike racks, a mounted air pump, park benches, and a drinking fountain.
The Victor Planning Board met this week to address three key agenda items, approving modifications to wireless infrastructure, a commercial site plan, and a residential subdivision after public hearings were conducted. The first approval involved Crown Castle and T-Mobile’s plan to upgrade antennas at a wireless communication facility on Brownsville Road. Read about it and more in today’s full breakdown of the meeting.
