Several Central New York ambulance companies have filed a lawsuit against Excellus BlueCross BlueShield and its CEO, James Reed, alleging underpayment for their services. The companies involved include TLC Medical Transportation Services, Inc., TLC Emergency Medical Services, Inc., Oswego County Ambulance and Hearse Services, Menter Ambulance, and Fingerlakes Ambulance EMS, Inc. In June, Cargill Inc. filed an application to modify its state permit to mine salt under Cayuga Lake, but even the nature of the company’s requested change remains a secret seven months later. The state Department of Environmental Conservation confirmed that it is reviewing the application, but the DEC’s Albany press office declined to provide a copy. Since then the agency has refused to promptly respond to WaterFront’s Nov. 30 Freedom of Information Law request for the single document. [Read More]

Mike Enslow, a Republican who serves as at-large supervisor in Waterloo, was unanimously reelected as the chairman of the Seneca County Board of Supervisors this week. The decision was made during the Board of Supervisors organizational meeting, where Enslow was elected for a two-year term, an extension from the previous one-year term structure. In Cayuga County Court, a former Auburn police officer, William Morrissey III, was sentenced to two years in state prison for sexually abusing a minor. Morrissey, 34, who served as a school resource officer at Auburn High School, faced charges including first-degree sexual abuse and disseminating indecent material to a minor. [Read More]
And finally, a new report from the New York State Department of Health has revealed a concerning level of food insecurity among adults in the Empire State, with one in four struggling to afford nutritious meals. The state report provides a county-by-county breakdown of adult food insecurity rates, based on the percentage of adults who have expressed concerns over affording nutritious meals in the past year.
