Watchdogs: NYS Needs More Robust Ethics Commission
New York good government groups want a more robust state ethics commission. The Commission on Ethics and Lobbying in Government came about in 2022 after the dissolution of the Joint Commission on Public Ethics. Watchdog groups want the agency to implement several measures to improve ethics, lobbying oversight and transparency.

A prolonged lake effect snow event is underway across Western and Central New York. Areas east of Lake Ontario and Lake Erie are both set to see feet of snow through early next week. For most of the Finger Lakes region, though, it will be a mix of sun and clouds with some snow showers the next 2-3 days.

Cayuga County legislators narrowly approved a recruitment outreach initiative aimed at expanding the pool of candidates for county jobs. Authorities are intensifying efforts to locate 83-year-old Reginald “Reggie” Vardon of Victor, missing since July 15. Vardon, an avid biker and walker, was last seen leaving the ESL on School Street in Victor before disappearing. An Elmira couple has filed a lawsuit against New York State, Chemung County, and multiple agencies, claiming the seizure and euthanasia of their squirrel, Peanut, and a raccoon named Fred were illegal. The animals, owned by Mark Longo and Daniela Bittner, were taken from their Pine City animal sanctuary, P’Nut’s Freedom Farm, on Oct. 30. [MORE]

ORANGE GAME WEEK: Syracuse closes out regular season at home against No. 8 Miami
The Syracuse football team closes out the regular season on Saturday at 3:30 p.m. when it welcomes No. 8 Miami to the JMA Wireless Dome for the first time since 2002. The Orange (8-3, 4-3 ACC) has won two straight and three of four in November, most recently beating Connecticut 31-24 last Saturday. Meanwhile, the Hurricanes (10-1, 6-1 ACC) are coming off a 42-14 bounce-back victory over Wake Forest after falling to Georgia Tech.

Dr. Terry Ward, superintendent of the Cato-Meridian Central School District, will step down on Jan. 4 after seven years to lead the North Syracuse Central School District. The Cato-Meridian Board of Education accepted his resignation on Nov. 18 and has named Michael Hoose as interim superintendent starting Jan. 6.
