Ontario County gets $2M to renovate vacant or distressed apartments, helping small landlords
Ontario County is set to transform its housing landscape, receiving a share of $40 million in state funding aimed at rehabilitating vacant and distressed apartments. Governor Kathy Hochul announced the awards as part of the Vacant Rental Improvement Program, designed to address the dire need for affordable housing in upstate New York. The program provides subsidies of up to $50,000 per unit for apartments serving tenants earning up to 80% of the Area Median Income (AMI) and $75,000 for units serving those earning 60% of AMI. Each renovated unit will be subject to a 10-year regulatory period to ensure affordability.

Syracuse suffers first loss of season to Texas in Legends Classic
The Syracuse men’s basketball team suffered its first loss of the season, falling 70-66 to Texas in the semifinal round of the Legends Classic on Thursday night at the Barclays Center in Brooklyn. Syracuse (3-1) trailed by as many as 16 points in the first half and faced an 11-point halftime deficit but took the lead with just over six minutes remaining in regulation before Texas (4-1) held on for the narrow victory.

House lawmakers have passed a bill advocates said will be harmful to nonprofits in New York and nationwide. House Resolution 9495 passed with a 219-184 vote after failing to get a two-thirds majority in the chamber last week. The bill gives the Treasury Secretary power to rescind tax-exempt status for nonprofits considered “terrorist supporting organizations.” On its first vote, it had strong bipartisan support.
