Major retailers, hotel operator contest Geneva’s property assessments in court
Following a property revaluation initiated in 2022 and effective since July 1, major establishments including Walmart, Walgreens, and Indus Hamilton Street Inc., an operator of local hotels, are contesting their property assessments in the state Supreme Court. Walmart, now assessed at $11.5 million, a 39% increase from its previous $8.3 million valuation, claims its Geneva location is worth $9 million. Indus disputes its new $11.5 million assessment, suggesting its combined properties should be valued at $7 million. Meanwhile, Walgreens, facing a 40% surge in its assessment to $5.9 million, asserts the pharmacy’s value stands at about $1.8 million.
Ferrara rejects resolution requesting analysis of high lung cancer rates around Seneca Meadows Landfill
Seneca Falls Town Supervisor Mike Ferrara flatly rejected Wednesday calls for a town board vote on a proposed resolution that asks the state to conduct an analysis of high lung cancer rates in census tracts around the Seneca Meadows Inc. landfill. The draft resolution calls for the state Department of Environmental Conservation to require the analysis as part of SMI’s environmental impact statement prepared for its application for a state permit to expand.
Schumer secures $3.6M for projects in Yates County
U.S. Senate Majority Leader Chuck Schumer announced the potential allocation of $3.6 million in federal funds for two significant projects in Yates County on Wednesday. The Saunders Finger Lakes Museum in Branchport stands to receive $2 million, aiding in the anticipated demolition/construction project which may commence as soon as next month.
