Waterloo Superintendent Terri Bavis named finalist for Dansville job
With Dr. Paul J. Alioto Dansville Central School District’s superintendent set to retire at the close of 2023 after a 13-year tenure, two prominent educational leaders have emerged as frontrunners for the top position. They are Thomas Frazier, the current deputy superintendent at Dansville, and Terri Bavis, the current superintendent at Waterloo Central School District.
What’s the hold up with Auburn’s Schine Theater renovation? City officials to get update eventually
As the Auburn Schine Theater approaches its 85th anniversary this week, there’s growing concern about the renovation progress made since its projected reopening date. The Citizen reports that Bowers Development, who last briefed the Auburn City Council in June 2022, had aimed for a reopening around this significant milestone. However, officials say they are waiting for another presentation from Bowers.
Canandaigua schools will unveil new nickname in October
As part of a state Education Department directive to phase out Native American references by June 2024, Canandaigua schools are gearing up to replace their long-standing nickname “Braves.” The Canandaigua City School District has shortlisted seven potential replacements through a series of surveys conducted over the last school year. The remaining options include Bears, Cardinals, Coyotes, Gray Wolves, Lake Hawks, Wave, and simply Canandaigua. Officials say a conclusive survey will soon be distributed among district stakeholders, narrowing down the choice to three final contenders.

Yates legislators approve additional funding for broadband expansion
The Yates County Legislature, in a contentious decision, has greenlit an extra $419,044 in spending for engineering services related to the county’s ongoing broadband project. The Finger Lakes Times reports that the move comes on top of a previous $1.05 million contract with New York Engineering Services. It was necessitated after a miscalculation were discovered in the initial plan, expanding the project from 205 miles of fiber connections to now 300 miles.
