Steuben County flood update: State gives new information, as photos of devastation paint picture of Debby’s remnants
Governor Kathy Hochul was in Steuben County over the weekend and has announced a series of emergency measures to assist homeowners hit by the remnants of Hurricane Debby. The initiative includes grants of up to $50,000 in Allegany, Delaware, Franklin, Steuben, and St. Lawrence counties to address essential repairs not covered by insurance or other disaster relief programs.

FATAL CRASH UPDATE: A motorcyclist was killed late Saturday night in a two-vehicle crash on State Route 104 in the Town of Ontario, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office said. Authorities said the crash occurred when a motorcycle, driven by 59-year-old Dale Bogardus of Ontario, struck the rear of a car driven by Regan Haran, 24, of Rochester. Haran and a passenger were not injured, but Bogardus was transported to Strong Memorial Hospital, where he later died from his injuries.

DOG RESCUED: Firefighters rescued a dog from a house fire that broke out late Sunday morning at 114 Eleventh Street, authorities said. The blaze, which started in the kitchen at the rear of the home, quickly spread upstairs but was swiftly contained. Homeowner Wendy Criss was not home at the time, but her dog, Diesel, a recently adopted mixed Lab, was found near the front door by firefighters.
ELDERLY WOMAN RESCUED: An 84-year-old woman was rescued Sunday afternoon after falling into a well on her Manchester property while searching for a lost pet, authorities said. Emergency responders were dispatched to Larue Road around 3:55 p.m. to find the homeowner conscious and alert, but with visible minor injuries.
SENTENCING: Patrick Dai, a Cornell University student arrested last year for making antisemitic threats online, is set to be sentenced today in Syracuse. The case has drawn attention to Dai’s mental health, as both prosecutors and defense attorneys acknowledge his struggles, including a recent autism diagnosis.
