First up, we have the surprise report that came out of the Waterloo Central School District on Saturday. An unexpected meeting of the Board of Education saw the announcement that Superintendent Terri Bavis would be retiring from education. She had been named a finalist for the superintendent job in Dansville, but the Board there decided to reopen the search after budget-related issues in Waterloo came to light. Just a week ago it was reported that she would finish out the year as superintendent, but cited a desire to focus on family in a statement shared after Saturday’s meeting. [Read More]
Next up, we have debate around a parole bill aimed at getting elderly inmates out of prison. Lawmakers are expected to weigh this bill in the upcoming legislative session, and would allow those 55 and older, who have served at least 15 years of their sentence, to be eligible for parole. It wouldn’t guarantee them release, advocates say, but would provide a path. Critics of the bill say it’s a slap in the face to victims and includes too many serious crimes like murder or child abuse. [Read More]
Kyle Evans has the latest from a tough weekend for SU basketball fans. Syracuse played Virginia, getting blown out and snapping a two-game win streak. The team moves to 5-3 on the season and will host Cornell at 8 p.m. on Tuesday. [Read More]
