Finger Lakes Forecast: Busy weather week ahead!
The Finger Lakes region will experience lake effect snow east of Lake Ontario on Monday, with snowfall rates of 1-2 inches per hour in areas like Oswego and northern Cayuga counties. High pressure will bring calmer, dry weather from Tuesday through most of Wednesday, though some light lake-effect snow may linger near Rochester. By Wednesday night, a storm system will bring widespread snow and a possible wintry mix, lasting into Thursday with potential precipitation type changes depending on temperature shifts. As colder air moves in on Friday, lake-enhanced snow showers are expected, followed by a dry start to the weekend before another system brings more precipitation by Saturday night.
Fast 5: What’s happening in the Finger Lakes?
Auburn city officials are demanding urgent road repairs after one of the harshest winters in years left state roads severely damaged. City Manager Jeff Dygert pointed to major routes like the Arterial and North Street, where temporary pothole fixes are insufficient. Officials criticized the delay of an $18 million state project and urged local businesses to push for state action.
Governor Kathy Hochul and Senator Kirsten Gillibrand warned that proposed federal education cuts could strip $5.5 billion from New York’s schools. Hochul emphasized that these cuts could lead to higher local taxes and jeopardize essential programs, including free meals and disability support. She urged New York’s congressional representatives to push back, stressing that the well-being of students and the state’s workforce is at stake.
Weeks after a devastating fire on Ovid’s Main Street, residents gathered at the Ovid Federated Church for a prayer service. The fire damaged 11 homes and six businesses, taking over 200 firefighters nine hours to control. Cleanup efforts continue with local officials collaborating to plan next steps, while fundraising initiatives are ongoing to support recovery.
A Sodus woman has pleaded guilty to third-degree arson in a scheme to collect on a $200,000 insurance policy. Pamela A. Robinson admitted to setting the fire after moving her belongings out, prompting an investigation that led to her indictment. She faces up to six years in prison, with sentencing scheduled for March 18.
New York voters must register with a political party by February 14 to vote in the June 24 primary election. Under the state’s closed primary system, only party members can select nominees for their party. Voter registration forms can be submitted online, by mail, or in person at local election offices, with early voting scheduled for June and October.
Eagles ride dominant defense to Super Bowl LIX win over Chiefs
The Philadelphia Eagles dominated Super Bowl LIX with a stifling defense, defeating the Kansas City Chiefs 40-22 and denying them a historic third straight championship. The Eagles' defense pressured Patrick Mahomes relentlessly, forcing three turnovers and holding the Chiefs to just 23 yards in the first half. Jalen Hurts led the offense with 221 passing yards, 72 rushing yards, and three touchdowns, earning Super Bowl MVP honors and avenging the Eagles' previous loss to the Chiefs. The victory capped off a remarkable season turnaround, with standout contributions from rookies and key defensive players transforming the Eagles into the league's top defensive unit.
