The Wayne County Board of Supervisors will meet Tuesday to address 2025 budget amendments, including penalties owed to the IRS and extending the 1% sales tax through 2027 to avoid property tax hikes. Retirements of key county employees, including the coroner and probation director, will be honored, with a new probation director appointment planned. Public safety initiatives include autopsy contracts, sheriff’s office equipment upgrades, and grant funding for law enforcement. Economic development efforts will also feature, with a $700,000 state grant for housing rehabilitation projects.
The Rochester-Genesee Regional Transportation Authority proposed expanding services to Yates County, featuring four fixed routes and dial-a-ride options for rural areas. The $1.5 million annual budget, partially funded by grants, could result in a $1.1 million deficit, prompting discussions about raising the county mortgage tax. Legislators debated balancing financial impacts with improving public transit for jobs, healthcare, and education access. Future meetings will focus on financial sustainability and public input as officials explore partnerships and potential innovations like mobile ticketing.
Marion Town Supervisor Summer Johnson announced her re-election campaign, focusing on continuing community-focused progress and fiscal responsibility. Her first-term achievements include workforce development, community engagement, and advancing local projects, reflecting bipartisan support. Johnson’s campaign slogan, “Community over Competition,” highlights her dedication to transparency and taxpayer benefits. Plans for a second term include improving public safety, organizing community events, and securing grants to promote Marion as a safe and welcoming town.
The Newark Village Board will hold a public hearing Tuesday evening on the Blue Cut Road Culvert Replacement Project, a $1 million infrastructure improvement funded by a Community Development Block Grant. Officials will provide updates on the project and gather community feedback, particularly on its benefits for low-to-moderate-income residents. Other agenda items include contract approvals, departmental updates, and planning for village events. The next regular meeting is scheduled for February 18, with public participation encouraged.
