A recent report by the New York State Commission of Correction has found significant lapses in mental health care at the Cayuga County Jail, which may have contributed to the suicide of Fred Williams, a 35-year-old inmate. Williams was found unresponsive on November 24, 2022, and later pronounced dead at Upstate University Hospital in Syracuse. [Read More]

In March voters in the village of Wolcott will cast an important ballot about the future of their community. The dissolution process has been started after a petition with 85+ signatures made its way to village hall last month. That petition means voters will cast a ballot on whether the Village should study dissolution, a process that would end village government there. Multiple departments battled a garage fire in Conquest over the weekend. On Saturday, January 6 around 6:30 p.m. first responders from Conquest, Cato, Montezuma, Ira, Plainville, Throop, Sennett, Wolcott, Savannah, Clyde, Victory, Red Creek, Fair Haven Fire, and Oswego were called to a garage fire on Curran Road. A solution to rural New York’s housing problems could lie in manufactured homes. A 2023 report found manufactured homes comprise around 2.5% of New York’s housing stock. In rural counties, it jumps to more than 10%. Local and state groups have been working to improve this form of housing. [Read More]
First responders were called to an intense fire during the overnight hours along Plank Road in Walworth. The fire, which apparently involved a snowmobile, according to scanner traffic, was intense enough to be seen from a distance away. Early indications suggest that the snowmobile was on a trail in that immediate area when it caught fire. [Read More]
