First responders busy with three serious accidents over the weekend
First responders from Cayuga, Seneca, and Wayne counties were busy with multiple incidents, which left multiple people hospitalized.

Thankfully there were no injuries when an SUV plunged into a pond along the New York State Thruway in Tyre over the weekend. The SUV was fully-submerged by the time first responders arrived. The recovery effort took quite a while, but traffic impact was minimal. [READ MORE]
One person was airlifted from the scene of a serious crash involving a passenger vehicle and motorcycle in Weedsport. It happened on Emerson Rd. and we’re tracking injuries as the new week begins. [READ MORE]
And finally, a Newark motorcyclist was airlifted from another crash in Wayne County on Saturday after he collided with a deer. It happened in Palmyra and caused 60-year-old David Hotel Jr. to be ejected from the bike. [READ MORE]

THRUWAY GATES: Summer travelers on the New York State Thruway may have noticed new traffic gates at several exits. These “Emergency Ramp Control Gates” are designed to aid snow plows during the winter months by preventing traffic from entering the roadway, allowing maintenance workers and State Police to focus on snow and ice response and emergency incidents. FAIR QUEEN NAMED: Isabella Blood, an 18-year-old senior from Ontario, was named the 2024 Wayne County Fair Queen on May 5 at Floral Hall on the fairgrounds. Blood, who is salutatorian of her class and active in Varsity Club, National Honor Society, and Math Team, will attend RIT in the fall to study accounting and aims to become a forensic accountant. LOCAL IMPACT: A listeria outbreak traced to deli meats has led to 12 confirmed cases in New York State, including one in Cayuga County, officials reported on Friday. The Cayuga County Health Department is monitoring the situation closely. [READ MORE]

New Yorkers rank 10th in financial distress, study finds
New Yorkers are among the most financially distressed in the U.S., according to a recent WalletHub study. The Empire State ranks 10th nationwide, with many residents having credit accounts in forbearance or deferred due to financial hardship. New York’s overall score in the study was 49.25, with notable increases in bankruptcy filings and high interest in debt-related search terms.
