Auburn City Council moves up Haines appointment, hears more concerns about safety at Auburn Prison
The Auburn City Council unanimously appointed Jennifer L. Haines as city manager last week, moving her start date forward to May 31 following current City Manager Jeffrey Dygert’s planned retirement. However, during public comment residents expressed growing concern about safety conditions at Auburn Correctional Facility. The Finger Lakes will see a wet and windy start to the week, with rain tapering off Monday morning and gusty winds reaching up to 29 mph. A brief return to wintry conditions arrives Monday night into Tuesday, with the chance of snow showers and highs only reaching the low 40s. By Wednesday, temperatures rebound into the 50s, but another round of rain and strong winds is expected through Thursday, with highs climbing to the low 70s. The week ends on a calmer note Friday, with partly sunny skies and cooler highs in the mid-50s.
Fast 5: What’s happening in the Finger Lakes?
A proposal to rezone 27 acres for new housing in Canandaigua will be the focus of a public hearing tonight. Canandaigua Homes LLC plans to build 79 three- and four-bedroom houses priced around $300,000 in the Stewart Place area. The developer is seeking a planned unit development designation to allow design flexibility, including limited sidewalks and front-facing garages. While the proposal aligns with city goals, sidewalk placement remains a sticking point, officials said.
Kristine Lytle is running unopposed in the upcoming special election for Cayuga County clerk. No Democratic candidate filed to run following Brian Scanlan’s sudden resignation earlier this month. Lytle, endorsed by the Republican and Conservative parties, previously ran in 2023 and now stands as the only declared candidate. Her experience with the county DMV, which the clerk oversees, has been a key part of her campaign message.
The E-ZPass and Tolls by Mail websites will be offline from April 9 to 14 for major upgrades. The update will merge both platforms into one user-friendly site with new features like live chat and mobile payment options. During the outage, customers won’t be able to access accounts or make payments via the website, app, or customer service lines. The revamped site will launch at e-zpassny.com and include enhanced tools, updated toll bill formats, and a single service number.
Lyons Central School’s Tim Carr created a memorable night for 11th-grade U.S. History students by hosting a historical movie screening and exhibit. Held in the Earl Buchanan Auditorium, the event featured personal artifacts, including a World War I gas mask from Carr’s own family. Over 40 students attended, many after sports or activities, and were treated to popcorn from a local theater. The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office added five new members to its ranks and promoted a deputy during a swearing-in ceremony held in Lyons. Survey: Most NYers support creating state public bank
The Community Service Society of New York survey showed more than half of people would support creating a public bank, run as a nonprofit by a local or state government, rather than being owned by private investors. Bills to create a public banking system are being considered by the state Legislature and the New York City Council, but have yet to pass.
Emergency crews respond to four-wheeler crash in Cayuga County
First responders from multiple departments rushed to the scene of a four-wheeler crash Sunday afternoon near Denman Road and East Loop Road in Cayuga County. Cayuga/Seneca Fire Wire reported that Montezuma Rescue, Throop Fire, Auburn City Ambulance, and Jordan Ambulance were all dispatched to the location. Units began responding just before 5 p.m. Two people were hospitalized after the incident.
