First up, we have several communities across the region getting accolades from the New York Sea Grant for their flood resilience efforts. Cayuga County is taking steps to safeguard its roads against damage from the construction of large-scale solar and wind energy projects in towns like Conquest and Venice. The county’s highway superintendent has announced plans to require bonds from solar and wind companies during the permitting process. These bonds are intended to ensure funds are available for any necessary road repairs resulting from heavy truck traffic associated with the construction of these renewable energy installations. Auburn faces a significant financial challenge as it prepares to rehabilitate the Lake Avenue bridge, with a funding gap of $4 million looming over the project. Initially awarded a BRIDGE NY grant in 2021 for $4.6 million against a project cost of $4.9 million, unforeseen bridge deteriorations have now pushed the estimated costs to $8.9 million. [READ MORE]

And finally — a Palmyra resident, Tracye Russell, has initiated a lawsuit against Wayne County, its sheriff’s office, and Sheriff Rob Milby, alleging she was subjected to sexual and physical assault during a strip search at the Wayne County Jail in December 2022. SEASON OVER: Syracuse will not play in 2024 NIT
The 2023-24 Syracuse men’s basketball season is over. The Orange were among the teams that opted out of the National Invitation Tournament. The three NIT teams from the ACC that will participate are Boston College, Virginia Tech, and Wake Forest. This is the third consecutive year that Syracuse has not played in the postseason. That last happened in 1968-1970.
