THANKSGIVING SAVINGS: Last week Tops revealed that they would be offering a deal to shoppers that made a full Thanksgiving meal cost less than $25. As inflation continues to force Americans to tighten their budgets and cut back, many are seeking out the best deals in order to still enjoy the holidays. President of Tops Friendly Markets, John Persons, explained that Thanksgiving is supposed to be a time spent with loved ones enjoying good food. Not pinching pennies. FingerLakes1.com recently caught up with a spokesperson for the company, who said it all was made possible thanks to strong planning by Tops supply chain managers. [READ MORE]
GENEVA COMPANY EYES GROWTH: Good news for economic development and reuse. A Geneva manufacturer may be taking advantage of a property on Middle Street as it eyes growth. Pretzel Logic is applying for a $1.8 million grant from Empire State Development as part of a $2 million plan to renovate the former CCMI Plastics Building located at 88 Middle Street. The company has 20 employees and would be growing its operation in more than just the physical sense if it moves forward. City officials said Pretzel Logic has outgrown its current space. [READ MORE]
REDISTRICTING CONTINUES: Officials say the state’s redistricting commission will reach consensus on new State Assembly lines by its December 2nd deadline. While much of the talk and focus has been on Congressional and State Senate district lines, which were battled for months before being ironed out, Assembly lines could have challenges. The Commission, who recently lost its leader, will meet one day before the new draft maps are due. They are using much of the Assembly map that was released earlier this year – and largely agreed to by reps from both sides of the aisle. Some areas around Syracuse remain a sticking point for leaders. [READ MORE]
BANK ROBBER FOUND GUILTY: A Newark man who robbed a bank last December will be sentenced next month after being found guilty in Wayne County Court. The Finger Lakes Times reports that Ryan Laws, age 43, was convicted of robbery and grand larceny in a trial that happened last week. He was arrested on December 8th, 2021 after a robbery at the West Main Street KeyBank branch in Sodus. Laws got away with around $2,300 during the robbery. He faces upwards of seven years in prison. FIRE INVESTIGATION UPDATE: The cause of the fire that destroyed Ferrara Lumber in Seneca Falls is still under investigation, according to state officials. That said, it looks like there could be some progress on-site, as clean-up appears to be moving forward. Sessler Wrecking Company has moved some demolition equipment onto the property. The former store, lumber yard, and showroom has sat largely untouched since the July 3rd fire that devastated it. Ferara Lumber quickly rebounded, opening a location on Rumsey Street in Seneca Falls. That location has quickly filled the void briefly left by its closure, serving contractors and residents alike through the summer and fall months. Local officials directed FingerLakes1.com to state fire investigators, who declined to comment on the status of the investigation. [READ MORE]
HOME CATCHES FIRE TWICE: And finally, a Steuben County home was reduced to a pile of rubble in the town of Campbell late-Saturday. The fire broke out around 7 p.m., according to firefighters, who say they were dispatched to the intersection of State Route 415 and Route 333. Flames could be seen pouring out of the front of the home through the doors and windows. Roughly two hours later the fire was brought under control. The home reignited during the overnight hours. By late-Sunday the building had been leveled. Debris was scattered across the lot where it sat before. It’s unclear what caused the fire. That remains under investigation at this time. [READ MORE]
