Officials hold press conference on Clyde-Savannah student assault investigation, but leave community with questions
Officials from the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office, Wayne County District Attorney’s Office, New York State Police, Clyde Police Department, and Village of Clyde held a press conference on Friday. While many expected new information to come to light following the disturbing assault of a student there at the Clyde-Savannah High School — the reality was opposite. They called the case ‘very sensitive’ and noted that the courts will ultimately dictate whether the teens are “adjudicated as youthful offenders or adults.” Prosecutors said there’s a significant range for outcomes in terms of sentencing. They noted that the next court dates would be November 15 and 16.
Sodus Point Village Councilor-elect dies unexpectedly at home days after election
John Nesbitt, who served as a Wayne County Court Judge for over two decades, was found dead at his home in Sodus Point on Thursday. No foul play is suspected in his death. Nesbitt, a respected figure in the Wayne County legal community, had retired from his judicial position at the end of 2022 after a distinguished 21-year career on the bench. While the cause of death is currently unknown, the coroner’s office is in communication with Nesbitt’s family regarding the possibility of conducting an autopsy to determine the cause.
Final results expected tomorrow afternoon (Nov. 14) after absentee ballots are counted!
Massive Southern Tier gas drilling spree proposed; 6,500 land leases sought for plan to extract methane and store CO2
A newly formed company with Texas roots wants to drill thousands of new natural gas wells across the Southern Tier in order to store carbon dioxide underground as well as extract methane from the Marcellus and Utica shale formations. Southern Tier CO2 to Clean Energy Solutions LLC is pursuing leases from landowners who own at least 30 acres in Broome, Tioga and Chemung counties. It recently mailed 6,500 information packages inviting people to sign up for what it hopes will be a massive carbon capture project. “With your lease and the leases of thousands of more like-minded landowners, we’ll commence a series of pilot wells …,” a cover letter states. “This is your opportunity to finally realize the benefits of your subsurface resources. By uniting our efforts, we can make the Southern Tier a sustainable energy pioneer and a major contributor to the fight against global climate change.”
