BUSINESS OF BEER: Craft beer stumbles nationally, but New York rises to the occasion
While the U.S. craft beer industry faces its most challenging period yet, New York state remains a bright spot in the landscape. Nationwide, craft breweries are closing at record rates, and production has declined for the second consecutive year. Yet, New York boasts 539 craft breweries and counting, ranking second in the nation.

The weekend will be dominated by mostly cloudy skies and much cooler temps than we’ve been accustomed to in recent weeks. But it’s just a sign of what’s to come! A slight chance of showers will stay in the forecast all weekend, as highs range in the low-to-mid 40s. There’s a slight warm-up in the forecast for the start of the holiday week, but we’ll be closing it out with even colder temps and a greater likelihood of lake effect snow, the National Weather Service says. All told, if you’re hitting the road through Tuesday, there’s little chance of problematic travel weather.

The City of Geneva is weighing its options when it comes to responding to flood risks. The City, which has dealt with a number of ongoing flood-related issues over the last two summers, outlined a plan last week on how it hopes to combat the flooding with long-term mitigation strategies. [MORE]
A jury has cleared the Auburn City School District of liability in a sex abuse case that dates back to the 1970s. The verdict determined the district’s negligence was not a substantial factor in the abuse of Pamela Deacon O’Grady by former music teacher Thomas R. Camp dating back decades. [MORE]
The Wayne County Sheriff’s Office recognized a local officer for his lifesaving efforts. Officer Jon Johnville was given a Lifesaving Award for his heroic actions during a January 2022 incident at the county jail. [MORE]
And finally, the Ontario County Sheriff’s Office congratulated the latest graduates of its Jail Therapy Program, which aims to help inmates address personal challenges, encourage positive change, and reduce recidivism. Participants completed a seven-week program that includes anger management, substance abuse treatment, and individual and family counseling. [MORE]
Syracuse drops second straight to Texas Tech, swept in Legends Classic
For a second straight night, the Syracuse men’s basketball team (3-2) came out on the losing end, falling 79-74 to Texas Tech (5-1) in the third-place game of the Legends Classic at the Barclays Center. The game was tied at 38 early in the second half, but the Red Raiders went on a 21-9 run to take control and never looked back.
ORANGE GAME DAY: Syracuse returns home to face UConn
After playing five of its last six games on the road, the Syracuse football team returns home to face Connecticut in the second to final game of the regular season today at noon. The Orange (7-3) and Huskies (7-3) will face off for the 13th time in school history, most recently meeting on September 10, 2022, when Cuse picked up a 48-14 victory.
