Sheriff: Penn Yan 26-year-old charged after fatal hit-and-run in Benton
Deputies identified the driver as Sarah E. Olsen of Penn Yan, charged with leaving the scene of an incident resulting in death and criminally negligent homicide. Olsen was arraigned and released on her own recognizance as the investigation continues. Officials are urging anyone with information to call 315-536-4438.

In response to growing concerns over school safety, the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office is investigating a series of threats circulating on social media. According to a press release from Sheriff Robert E. Milby, the threats appear to be part of a larger national pattern, with many of them being reposts rather than direct or credible threats to local schools. [Read More]
A 38-year-old man is in critical condition after being struck by a pickup truck Thursday night in the Town of Geneva. The incident occurred around 9:15 p.m. on Routes 5&20 when the man, who was walking with his bicycle in the roadway, was hit by a Ford F350. [Read More]
Residents near Seneca and Cayuga Lakes are urged to exercise caution as harmful algal blooms (HABs), commonly known as blue-green algae, have become widespread across the Finger Lakes. The Seneca County Health Department reports that these blooms, fueled by recent warm temperatures and low winds, pose health risks to humans and animals through skin contact or ingestion. [Read More]

Odessa fire district proposal stalls, second hearing set for Oct. 16
A hearing on forming the Odessa Unified Fire District met with resistance as town officials raised concerns, leading to a second meeting next month. The district would serve the Village of Odessa and portions of surrounding towns, replacing the current fire protection service.
