Finger Lakes HABs season gets early start with bloom confirmed in Seneca Falls on Cayuga Lake
The Finger Lakes’ 2024 HABs season kicked off this week with a widespread bloom reported near the northwest tip of Cayuga Lake. Based on photos taken Monday from the dock of a homeowner on Lower Lake Road in Seneca Falls, the state Department of Environmental Conservation confirmed it as a cyanobacteria bloom, or HAB (harmful algal bloom), rather than harmless floating pollen, which is common in early June.

Bloomfield softball, Victor girls lacrosse advance to state finals
Two more local high school teams punched their tickets to the state finals on Friday. The Bloomfield softball team defeated Pine Plains (IX), 1-0, to advance to their first-ever state championship. Bri Leitten drove in the only run, bringing Call McCombs home from second with an RBI single. The Victor girls lacrosse team held on for an 11-10 win over the West Islip Lions (XI) to advance to their third-straight state final.
