Medicaid changes could cost New York billions
Congressional proposals to cut Medicaid spending could cost New York billions, significantly impacting coverage for millions of residents. The state, which heavily benefits from the Affordable Care Act’s enhanced federal match for non-disabled adults, could lose up to $5.3 billion annually—or $24 billion over the next decade if a funding cap is imposed. These potential cuts would force New York to either dramatically increase its Medicaid spending or reconsider its coverage policies.

Cayuga County Legislator Stephanie DeVito has resigned less than two years into her term after accepting a new job opportunity outside her district. DeVito, who was elected in 2023, had already stepped back from committee work and the Democratic caucus before her departure. Her resignation leaves the Legislature with 10 members and an open seat that may be filled by appointment.
Cornell University replaced singer Kehlani with rapper Gunna as the Slope Day headliner following backlash over Kehlani’s comments on the Gaza war. After pro-Israel student protests and administrative concerns, the university moved quickly to secure Gunna and DJ duo Louis the Child for the May 7 event. Kehlani responded by clarifying her opposition to genocide while acknowledging broader cancellation efforts.

A New York appeals court has upheld the conviction of former Auburn school resource officer William Morrissey III for sexually abusing a 14-year-old student. Morrissey pleaded guilty to multiple charges after investigators uncovered explicit communications with the victim while he worked at Auburn High School. He is currently serving two years in prison along with 10 years of post-release supervision.
A former Cayuga County resident, Jerry P. Gordon, was arrested at Newark Liberty International Airport for allegedly plotting a murder and threatening violence.
