Governor Kathy Hochul announced a significant financial boost for water quality and conservation efforts in New York State, with over $1 million allocated to the Finger Lakes Land Trust (FLLT) to aid in the protection of Owasco Lake. ICYMI: Hammondsport Superintendent Kyle Bower talks losses in proposed NYS budget
Among the most-controversial items inside Governor Kathy Hochul’s 2024-25 proposed state budget are massive cuts to school aid. Among the most-staggering cuts in the Finger Lakes – Penn Yan losing $2.2 million, Watkins Glen losing $1.9 million, or South Seneca losing 1.5 million. This week we caught up with Hammondsport Superintendent Kyle Bower, who said his district stands to lose more than 30% of its state aid if Hochul’s budget is adopted as-is. It’s a reality that he says would devastate his district, and most other rural ones across the region.
The New York State Department of Environmental Conservation (DEC) announced the completion of the cleanup process for neighborhoods around the former Geneva Foundry Site at 23 Jackson Street in Geneva by the close of 2024. This effort marks the culmination of a multi-year project initiated in 2017 to remove soil contaminated with arsenic and lead from residential areas near the historic foundry. [Read More]
A unit of Casella Waste Systems Inc. filed suit late yesterday against the Town of Thurston to try to block enforcement of a new local law that bans the spread of municipal sewage sludge on certain Steuben County fields. The Vermont-based company that operates landfills and composting facilities across New York and New England alleges that Thurston’s law violates the state’s Right to Farm law as well as state solid waste policy.
