Devastating severe flooding across the Finger Lakes after Debby’s remnants pass through
Local authorities have issued boating advisories for Keuka, Seneca, and Canandaigua Lakes following heavy rains that have swept debris into the water, creating dangerous conditions. Most of the region saw at least an inch of rain, with some locations in Seneca, Ontario, Steuben, Wayne, and Yates counties seeing more than 4 inches of rain in mere hours.
First responders talk about the dramatic water rescues that took place yesterday in Steuben County, as evacuation orders went out to residents in several communities. A state of emergency remains active there until further notice due to roads and bridges being washed out, and property being destroyed.
Here’s a look at what to expect if you’re hitting the water this weekend.
Clean-up is underway across the region. We have videos and photos from the flooding as it was happening here.

Fast 5: What’s happening in the Finger Lakes?
SETTLEMENT IN SENECA: Former Seneca County Manager Kyle Lovell received a $195,000 severance payment as part of a separation agreement finalized last month. The agreement, signed by Board of Supervisors Chairman Mike Enslow on July 9 and Lovell on July 10, marked the end of Lovell’s tenure, which began in August 2023.
HOTEL GETS NEW NAME: A budget hotel in downtown Auburn has undergone a transformation, rebranding from the Days Inn to The Cayuga Inn at the Finger Lakes under new ownership. According to reporting by The Citizen, the hotel, located at 37 William St., was purchased by Jai Aruna LLC of Clifton, New Jersey, for $2.41 million on April 9, according to Cayuga County property records.
LAYOFFS COMING: Cargill Deicing Technology is reducing operations at its Cayuga Salt Mine in response to decreased demand for road salt after several mild winters in the Northeast. The company plans to cut one of its three shifts, resulting in the layoff of 25 employees, reducing the workforce at the Lansing facility to 165.
UNDER PRESSURE: After state officials admitted last month that New York State will likely miss a key deadline required by its ambitious 2019 climate law, business groups have seized the moment to lobby Gov. Kathy Hochul to relax the law’s basic mandates. “The costs have gone up so much I now have to say, ‘What is the cost on the typical New York family?’” the governor said in a recent TV interview. “The goals are still worthy. But we have to think about the collateral damage of these decisions. Either mitigate them or rethink them.”
UNION APPROVED: In a contentious meeting Tuesday night, the Seneca Falls Town Board voted 3-2 to recognize the Civil Service Employees Association (CSEA) as the official bargaining agent for town workers. The decision, supported by board members Jackson Puylara, Dawn Dyson, and Kaitlyn Laskoski, paves the way for future contract negotiations with the newly formed union.
