DEDICATION TOMORROW: Manchester will honor the 29 victims of the 1911 Lehigh Valley Express train derailment with a special ceremony on Sunday, August 25. A train bell will ring 29 times in memory of those who perished when the train careened off a trestle bridge and into the Canandaigua Outlet.
SUPERINTENDENT SEARCH: School officials in the BOCES system and Penn Yan have given an update on the search for Penn Yan’s next superintendent. A community survey, available from August 28 for two weeks, will gather input from Penn Yan residents.
UNION FIGHT CONTINUES: Workers in Seneca Falls are pressing town officials to expedite the recognition of their union, a process that has been stalled despite a majority vote by the town board in favor of it earlier this month. The delay is being attributed to inaction by the town supervisor and town attorney, which workers say is wasting valuable town resources.
ENVIRONMENTAL FUNDING: Governor Kathy Hochul has announced a $42 million investment aimed at enhancing water quality and reducing harmful algal blooms (HABs) in the Eastern Finger Lakes region. The funding is part of Hochul’s 2024 State of the State commitment to address the root causes of HABs and support projects that prevent runoff, protect drinking water, and improve climate resiliency.
ENERGY PACKAGE UNVEILED: State Senator Tom O’Mara (R,C-Big Flats) and Senate Republican Leader Rob Ortt introduced a sweeping legislative package on August 23 aimed at securing a clean, affordable, and reliable energy future for New York residents. Titled “Creating Lasting Affordable Energy for New York,” the package comes as a response to growing concerns over the implementation of the Climate Leadership and Community Protection Act (CLCPA) and its impact on the state’s energy grid and economy.
National Women’s Hall of Fame Appoints Interim Director
The National Women’s Hall of Fame in Seneca Falls has named Karen Macier as its interim director following the departure of Jennifer Gabriel, who served as executive director for three years. Gabriel will continue to support the Hall in an advisory capacity.
