Yates Legislature Opposes Medicaid Cuts, Advances Community Center Project, Approves Staffing and Budget Measures
The Yates County Legislature unanimously approved a resolution opposing proposed federal Medicaid cuts, citing that 20% of residents rely on the program. Lawmakers also received an update on the Yates County Community Center project, which is on track to break ground in September pending local approvals. Additionally, legislators passed measures to override the state tax cap, approve staffing changes, and adopt budget items totaling more than $8.3 million.

Plans to redevelop the Dryer Road Park playground are underway, with construction expected in 2026 using partial ARPA funding.
Cornell Cooperative Extension of Cayuga County Executive Director Daniel Welch highlighted the organization's expanding impact during an appearance on “Inside Government,” emphasizing programs in agriculture, youth development, nutrition, and community outreach. A massive barn fire in Cayuga County on Friday destroyed a structure near Route 34 and Center Road in the town of Scipio, despite a swift response from multiple fire departments. The barn collapsed within 40 minutes of crews arriving, prompting firefighters to focus on extinguishing remaining hot spots. No injuries were reported, and the cause of the fire remains under investigation.
One person was hospitalized following a two-car crash Friday afternoon at the intersection of South Street Road and Silver Street Road in the Town of Fleming. Emergency crews responded to reports of possible entrapment, with firefighters from Fleming and Owasco safely extricating all occupants. One individual was transported to Upstate University Hospital, and the scene was cleared within an hour.
A 64-year-old man died in a house fire early Thursday morning in the town of Addison, Steuben County. First responders pulled Randy M. Allington from the burning home and administered CPR, but he was pronounced dead at the scene. The cause of the fire remains under investigation by the Steuben County Fire Investigation Team.
