NYS Health Commissioner declares imminent threat from Eastern Equine Encephalitis in Cayuga County
State Health Commissioner Dr. James McDonald has declared an imminent threat to public health in Cayuga County due to the presence of Eastern Equine Encephalitis virus in the area. This declaration follows the confirmation of EEEv infection in two horses in the county, both of which have since died. The virus, which can be transmitted to humans through mosquito bites, poses a significant risk to public health.
