Housing crisis deepens Homsite outlines efforts and programs in Cayuga County
As housing needs grow across Cayuga County, Homsite continues its 50-year mission to provide safe, affordable homes through programs like emergency repairs, rental assistance, and mobile home replacements. Executive Director Erica Ryan discussed the nonprofit’s evolving efforts on Beyond the Front Page, highlighting the rising demand for services like the AHC home repair and Restore programs. Homsite also manages 48 senior housing units and administers the Section 8 voucher program, which now has a waitlist exceeding three years due to state-level changes. With an aging housing stock and lead safety concerns, the agency is working with the county to address hazards and explore property rehabilitation solutions.
Finger Lakes Forecast: Cool start to the week.

Tuesday looks to be the coldest day, with gusty winds and a high near 33. Conditions improve midweek with more sunshine and highs in the low 40s by Wednesday. Rain chances return Thursday through Saturday as temperatures gradually warm into the mid-50s.
Fast 5: What’s happening in the Finger Lakes?
The widow of a man killed in a 2024 crash is suing the truck driver and his employer, alleging negligence led to the fatal accident in Aurelius. The lawsuit claims Fingerlakes Agronomics allowed driver Raymond Swank to stay on the road despite a previous crash and concerns about his health. Swank allegedly fell asleep at the wheel, causing the multivehicle collision that killed 74-year-old Anthony Carnevale. The suit seeks damages, accusing both Swank and the company of failing to act with reasonable care.
With its landfill slated to close in 2028, Ontario County is backing a new waste-reduction effort in Geneva with a $100,000 investment. The funds will help launch ReUse Systems, a nonprofit focused on diverting furniture, appliances, and building materials from the landfill through retail, repair, and job training programs. The initiative will partner with Finger Lakes ReUse and aims to serve residents countywide. While most supervisors supported the project as a sustainable solution, at least one raised concerns about the funding.
The Auburn Chamber Orchestra will perform a free “Pops Concert: Let’s Go to the Movies” this Sunday at 2 p.m. at the Merry-Go-Round Playhouse, featuring iconic film scores like Star Wars, James Bond, and Batman. Led by conductor Dr. Victor Vallo, the 60-member ensemble ranges in age from teens to a 98-year-old violinist, highlighting the community’s diverse musical talent. Orchestra President Ally Colvin previewed the program on Beyond the Front Page, noting the event’s accessibility and live cinematic appeal. The concert also features a special introduction from the Cayuga Museum, tying Auburn’s historic role in film technology to the performance.
Dansville has begun clearing space for a long-awaited downtown parking lot aimed at easing congestion and supporting local businesses. The project will add around 60 spaces behind Main Street, replacing the former Dansville Fitness Club. While some spots will serve nearby apartments, most are intended to support over a dozen businesses, including popular weekend destinations. Village crews will handle construction to save money, with completion expected by late spring.
Mark’s Leisure Time Marine is expanding its Canandaigua location with a new state-of-the-art service center and upgraded showroom, reinforcing its status as a leading boating dealer in the Finger Lakes. The project follows rapid growth since acquiring the Eastern Boulevard property two years ago and will support a full range of marine services, including engine work and maintenance. A modern showroom will feature top brands like Barletta and MasterCraft, offering customers a more immersive buying experience. The expansion is set to wrap by early summer, with a grand opening celebration planned for June.

Buffalo Bills, Kathy Hochul celebrate milestone at Highmark Stadium
Governor Kathy Hochul, the Buffalo Bills, and Erie County officials celebrated a key moment in Western New York’s largest-ever construction project: the topping out of the new $2.1 billion Highmark Stadium. More than 1,400 guests and hundreds of union workers gathered as crews lifted the final steel beam 156 feet into place. The beam, adorned with an American flag and evergreen tree, capped off the structural steel phase of construction — a major achievement in building the 60,000-seat stadium.
