Bill to prevent calamity at Cayuga Lake salt mine stalls: How did other environmental bills integral to the Finger Lakes fare?
A bill requiring the state to set an appropriate bond to cover a potential catastrophic accident at Cargill’s salt mine under Cayuga Lake sailed through the state Senate by a 60-0 vote in the closing hours of this year’s Legislative session. A man convicted of assaulting two Auburn police officers will serve his full 14-year prison sentence, Cayuga County District Attorney Brittany Grome Antonacci announced. The Appellate Division rejected Justin Tillmon’s appeal to reduce his sentence. [Read More]
Waterloo officials are inviting ideas on how to use a $10 million state grant to revitalize the downtown and canalside areas. At the June 10 Village Board meeting, Mayor Walt Bennett encouraged business owners and residents to submit ideas and funding applications for the Downtown Revitalization Initiative (DRI). Hornell Police Chief Ted Murray has been suspended for one week without pay for leaving his gun unattended at police headquarters, the Board of Public Safety announced Friday. The incident occurred on April 8, and while the Steuben County District Attorney’s Office found no criminal wrongdoing, Murray acknowledged a “lapse in judgment” and accepted the suspension. Authorities say a man who was in his first year as a member of the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office has been arrested for allegedly assaulting his girlfriend. At the time, Smith was in his first year with the Wayne County Sheriff’s Office. He was suspended with pay but later resigned during the internal investigation.
