Fast 5: What’s happening in the Finger Lakes?
A 19th-century building at 19 Columbia St. in Clyde was demolished on Feb. 26 due to severe structural failures. The Wayne County Regional Land Bank, which acquired the property through tax foreclosure, had hoped to restore it but deemed it beyond repair. The $230,000 demolition was carried out to protect neighboring buildings, with no redevelopment plans announced. Once part of the Clyde Historic District, the Italianate-style structure was tied to the Erie Canal and railroad commerce before its decline.
The Keuka Lake Association has launched its 2025 Membership Campaign, urging residents, businesses, and lake enthusiasts to support its mission of preserving Keuka Lake and its watershed. As the only organization solely dedicated to the lake’s protection, the KLA focuses on conservation, advocacy, and education efforts. Leadership emphasizes the need to grow membership to strengthen collaborative projects and ensure long-term sustainability. Supporters can join or renew their membership online, contributing to efforts that safeguard Keuka Lake for future generations.
Wayne Central School District is celebrating 40 years of Music In Our Schools Month with a series of performances highlighting the importance of music education. The district encourages the community to attend and support its talented students.
New Yorkers will have the chance to see a total lunar eclipse, or “blood moon,” on the night of March 13 into early March 14. The eclipse begins at 11:57 p.m. EST, with totality lasting from 2:26 a.m. to 3:31 a.m., as the moon turns red due to Earth’s shadow. NASA notes the shade of red varies based on atmospheric conditions, and viewers can use binoculars or cameras for a better look. This will be North America’s only total lunar eclipse of 2025, with the next one set for March 3, 2026.
New York correction officers will return to work Monday under a new agreement with the state’s Department of Corrections and Community Supervision. The deal, requiring at least 85% of staff to report back, reinstates health insurance, prevents further disciplinary actions, and establishes a safety committee. However, officers who continue striking may face legal consequences, and some have opted to resign. Additionally, nine facilities will resume weekend visitations, restoring some normalcy for incarcerated individuals.
