Hochul seeks federal disaster declaration for Tropical Storm Debby recovery in Ontario, Yates, and other counties
Governor Kathy Hochul has requested a Major Disaster Declaration from President Joe Biden to assist New York communities impacted by Tropical Storm Debby in August. If approved, the declaration would provide federal funding for 10 counties, including Allegany, Broome, Ontario, and Yates, to support debris removal, emergency measures, and infrastructure repairs.

Western New York saw extreme weather on Friday as a tornado touched down near Friendship and other parts of the region set a daily rainfall record. The Finger Lakes saw rounds of rain bring 1-2 inches of precipitation, but the tornado that was confirmed that afternoon stole most of the headlines. [Read More]
Starting Monday, biologists from the DEC will be monitoring forage fish populations on Canandaigua Lake. The focus of the study is primarily on alewife, a key species in the lake’s ecosystem. [Read More]
Details are still limited, but reports Saturday afternoon of a vehicle that had crashed into a house on State Route 21 in Manchester made rounds throughout the community. The incident happened near the border between Manchester and Palmyra. [Read More]
Starting July 2025, New York school boards will be required to appoint at least one non-voting student member to attend public meetings. This change comes after Governor Kathy Hochul signed legislation aimed at giving students a voice in school board decisions. [Read More]

Kyle McCord threw for a career-high 381 yards and four touchdowns as Syracuse held off No. 23 Georgia Tech, 31-28, on Saturday afternoon at the JMA Wireless Dome to start the season 2-0. Trebor Pena, who scored three touchdowns last week, hauled in two more in this one and had a career-high 88 receiving yards on six catches. Oronde Gadsden II caught six passes for a game-high 93 yards and two TDs.

Ithaca police investigating after college women see lewd man outside window
The Ithaca Police Department is investigating two separate incidents of lewd and lascivious behavior reported on September 5. Both incidents occurred on East Hill, with one reported around 9:00 p.m. and the other at 10:00 p.m. The victims, both college-aged females living on University Avenue and Delaware Avenue, reported seeing an unknown man outside their windows engaging in sexually explicit behavior.
